A Brief History

  • Ballina High School is the longest established secondary school in the Ballina Shire. It is
    justifiably proud of its reputation and tradition of success in academic, sporting and cultural fields

  • Ballina High School was opened in 1956 as a co-educational high school. Having started as an independent High School in 1929 it has been the main provider of secondary education in Ballina for nearly 75 years

  • A NSW Department of Education and Training co-educational high school catering from Year 7 to Year 12.

  • Current staffing: 42 Teaching Staff, 12 School Administrative Support Staff

  • Current enrolment: 640 students

  • Highly experienced and committed staff.

  • Programmes well supported by technological resources

  • Vocational Education programs: Hospitality, Metal & Engineering, Construction and Information Technology.

  • Strongly established links with industry and the local community through work experience, work placements and traineeships.

  • Formal links with Southern Cross University, TAFE, NSW Fisheries, NSW Parks and Wildlife Service Coastcare,  Thursday Plantation and Metalcast. Special programmes and support services to cater for a diversity of students with differing needs.

  • Director Generals Awards for Achievement for Music and Band, Marine Education, Driver Education, Aviation studies and Curriculum Initiatives.

  • Winner of NSW Tidy Town and Schools Environment Award 1997.

  • Winner of NSW Keep Australia Beautiful Schools Award 1998.

  • Runner up in 2002 and 2003 VET in Schools award for NSW

  • Ministers Award of Excellence for Students Achievement in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.

  • District Award for Best Educational Program 2002 and 2003

  • Individual HSC students won the District Award for Academic Achievement in 2002 and 2003

  • Individual student won the 2003 Naidoc scholarship, one of six in NSW

  • Rock band Brittle FX won NSW Youthrock in 2003 and Queensland Ashton School Bands competition in 2003
